A SNIPER is a sniper, a military/paramilitary sharpshooter who engages targets from concealed positions or at ranges beyond the target's detection capability. Snipers generally have specialized training and are equipped with telescopic sights. Modern snipers use high-precision rifles and high-magnification optics. They often also act as scouts/observers who provide tactical information to their units or command headquarters.

In addition to long-range and high-level marksmanship, military snipers are trained in a variety of special operations techniques: detection, stalking, target range estimation methods, camouflage, tracking, bushcraft, field craft, infiltration, special reconnaissance and observation, surveillance, and target acquisition. Snipers must have complete control of their bodies and senses to be effective. They must also have the skills to use data from their scope and monitors to adjust their aim and hit extremely distant targets. During training, snipers are given charts that they are drilled on to ensure they can make last-minute calculations when in the field.
