The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat, long-range supersonic fighter-bomber designed and produced by the American company McDonnell Douglas in the early 1960s.
Having become, over the course of its long operational life, one of the icons of American air superiority during the Vietnam War and the Cold War, it is still in service with some air forces.
The high flexibility of the project allowed the evolution of the Phantom to include specific versions for aerial reconnaissance and ground attack with conventional and nuclear ammunition.
To date, it is the only U.S. military aircraft that can be owned and flown by private individuals.
