The 1st "Special Operations" Air Brigade is a large unit of the Italian Air Force, which integrates aircraft for tactical transport and airborne troops, with the task of managing the sector of the special forces and the protection forces of the armed force.
The 1st "Special Operations" Air Brigade, named after Lieutenant Colonel Vezio Mezzetti, originates from the "1º Terrestrial Hunting Wing" created in Brescia on 7 May 1923 equipped with Hanriot HD.1, SPAD S.VII and SPAD S.XIII. The department was formed by the 6th Aviano Group, the 13th Venaria Reale Hunting Group and the 23rd Cinisello Balsamo Group.
During the Second World War he was stationed from 1940 to 1942 at the military airport of Trapani-Milo and was dissolved following the Badoglio Proclamation of 8 September 1943.
The Air Force on 1 May 1956 reconstituted the 1st All Weather Fighter Wing equipped with North American F-86 Saber which remained operational for three years, until the 23rd group and all the fighters in charge, remained framed in the 51st Aerobrigata COT, while the 6th and 17th Groups became IT
