The Shining is a 1980 film written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, together with Diane Johnson.

Based on the novel of the same name written by Stephen King in 1977, the film, which stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd, tells the drama of the Torrance family, who must spend the winter in total isolation in a hotel high in the mountains, the scene of disturbing and supernatural events that drive the father Jack to go mad, manifesting murderous instincts. The son, little Danny, shows that he possesses a complex of extrasensory faculties, here called the shining (translated as "the shimmer"), which lead him to have visions of the dark past of the place and future events.

The Shining represents a stage in the itinerary of crossing-appropriation-breaking through cinematographic genres carried out by Kubrick during his career. It quickly became a cult movie, entered the collective imagination and has sometimes been classified as the best horror film ever. The Shining was elected 2nd among the best horror films in the history of cinema, after The Exorcist, in a ranking drawn up by the London magazine Time Out. In 2008, Empire placed it at 52nd place in the list of the 500 best films of all time. In 2018, it was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress
