The United States Army Special Forces (also known as the "Green Berets", due to the distinctive beret contributed by a young officer, Edson Raff) are special forces of the United States Army trained for unconventional warfare and special operations. They were founded by Aaron Bank. Their official motto is De Oppresso Liber, an untranslatable pseudo-Latin phrase, which is understood to mean "To Liberate the Oppressed", referring to one of their primary tasks: to train and assist the local forces of a foreign country allied with the United States. Special Forces units have six specific primary tasks: unconventional warfare, contributing to the internal defense of foreign countries, special reconnaissance, direct action, combating terrorism and hostage rescue. Other tasks include: search and rescue, peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, mine clearance, counter-drug trafficking operations
