The 4th GRUPELICOT carries out preparation and maintenance tasks for aircraft embarked on the units based in Taranto. The creation of the new department for the maintenance of embarked helicopters was necessary to avoid long and costly transfers of AB 204s to the nearest base in Catania Fontanarossa, about 500 kilometers away. On 28 October 1978, for the first time, a helicopter from the 4th Group was used in a real rescue mission. In addition to providing assistance to the helicopters of the 2nd Naval Division in Taranto, the group carries out training missions for other entities or departments of the Navy, in particular MARICENTADD, the training center of the Navy in Taranto where the crews of the Navy train. The department received the Battle Flag on 18 November 1989.

The flight line of the 4th GRUPELICOT consists of AB 212 ASuW/ASW helicopters for anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare and AB 212 NLA and SH-3D Sea King helicopters for the Amphibious Combat Nucleus formed in May 1994 to cooperate with the "San Marco" Regiment with helicopters that have received appropriate modifications for this task. The helicopters in the "heliassault" version for support to amphibious forces and special forces, are without radar, sonar and FLIR sensors and are equipped with two 12.7 mm machine guns, two MG 42/59 swivel machine guns, rocket launchers and an integrated passive (SIAP) and active self-protection system, with anti-missile sensors and an automatic launch system of radar (chaffs) and IR (flares) false targets for survival in hostile territory.
