United States Route 66 (also known as Route 66 or the Mother Road) was one of the first federal highways in the United States (a national highway), opening on November 11, 1926, although all signs were not installed until the following year. It originally ran from Chicago to Santa Monica Beach, passing through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, for a total distance of 3,755 kilometers (2,333 mi).
Used for westward migration, especially during the Dust Bowl, it supported the economies of the communities through which it passed: the people prospered from the road's growing popularity, and some fought tenaciously to keep it alive after the new Interstate Highway System was created. The road was officially removed from the highway system in 1985, when it and the others were replaced by the Interstate Highway System.
The road currently exists as Historic Route 66 and has thus returned to the maps in this guise.
