The 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment is a parachute unit of the French Army composed entirely of personnel from the Foreign Legion; structured as a light infantry regiment, the unit is an integral part of the 11e brigade parachutiste (11th Parachute Brigade), a formation that brings together the main airborne regiments of the French Army.

Created as a battalion in October 1948 specifically to participate in the Indochina War, the unit immediately characterized itself as an airborne rapid reaction force, distinguishing itself in the hard fighting against the Viet Minh. Expanded to a regiment in December 1955, the unit fought in the Algerian War, and then took part in all the major operations of the French Armed Forces in Africa, from the Battle of Kolwezi in Zaire in 1978, to Operations Manta and Épervier during the Libyan-Chadian War of the 1980s, up to Operations Pélican in the Republic of Congo in 1997 and Licorne in the Ivory Coast from 2002 to 2011.

The unit has also been employed in various peacekeeping operations, as part of the Multinational Force in Lebanon in 1982 and in the UNPROFOR, IFOR and KFOR missions in the former Yugoslavia. In 2010, the 2nd REP took part in the missions of the French contingent engaged in the war in Afghanistan, while in 2013 one of its companies participated in the war in Mali.

Originally formed as a simple paratrooper unit, since 1963 the regiment has been restructured as a highly specialized commando unit, trained for a wide range of different operations and ready to be rapidly deployed anywhere in the world.
