In February 1956, production of the 7-seater minibus version of the popular Volkswagen Transporter began. Called "Samba", it was characterized by the presence of 23 windows, four of which on each side of the roof. Available with or without a sunroof, the Samba became hugely popular. Subsequently the number of glasses went from 23 to 21, with the elimination of the two windows that occupied the rear pillars on the first version. A 23-glass example of the Samba was the protagonist of a very long tour with Michel Delpierre, supported by the Belgian VW importer, D'Ieteren, who between 1960 and 1965 crossed one hundred and ten countries covering 350,000km.
