The Clio Williams adopts a 1998cc 4-cylinder 16-valve engine called F7R, which is the evolution of the F7P engine installed on the Clio 16s and 16v, it differs from the latter essentially for a crankshaft with extended stroke, for pistons with increased bore and a completely revised cylinder head which result in 150hp at 6100 rpm of maximum power and a torque of 175nm (18.2kgm) at 4500 rpm which however is still available from low revs (90% of the torque is already found at 2500 rpm) unlike the Clio 16v which with its F7P delivered 137hp at 6500 rpm and had a maximum torque of 158nm at 4250 which however took a while to make itself felt before 3500 rpm.

The Clio Williams was produced by Renault to be used as an attack weapon in the 1993 French Rally Championship, in fact its little sister Clio 16v found itself battling in its class with 2000cc cars with obvious competitiveness problems on several special stages especially those that required low-end torque which Williams resolved immediately!
