Officially known as the Embarked Aircraft Support Group, it was established in February 1991 in the Marine Corps Air Station of Cherry Point, in the US state of North Carolina, but its genesis dates back to a few months earlier. In fact, the determination of the then Chief of Staff of the Navy, team admiral Filippo Ruggiero, for the creation of an organizational element suitable to ensure technical, logistical and training support to the new aircraft that the Force Armata had chosen to embark on the Giuseppe Garibaldi: at the time, the latter was called an aircraft carrier cruiser, but the increasing availability of embarked aircraft and, above all, the experience gradually acquired during numerous real operations have substantiated its use as a real aircraft carrier.
