The Eurofighter Typhoon, whose prototype was designated EFA (European Fighter Aircraft), is an advanced fourth generation, twin-engine multirole military aircraft (Swing Role), with the primary role of interceptor and air superiority fighter. Typhoon design and production are carried out by a consortium of three companies, Alenia Aermacchi (merged into Leonardo, the new name of Finmeccanica in 2017), Airbus Group and BAE Systems, through a common holding, Eurofighter GmbH, established in 1986. The project is managed by NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency), which also acts as the first client.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is an extremely agile aircraft, designed for extremely effective air-to-air combat against other aircraft, and has been described as second only to the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, both US and fifth generation even if the Raptor and the F-35 cost almost double. Subsequently, the aircraft produced benefited from several improvements, such as equipment to undertake air-to-surface attack missions and compatibility with an equally growing number of different weapons and equipment, including the SCALP cruise missile and the RAF's Brimstone. The aircraft saw its combat debut during the 2011 military intervention in Libya with the Royal Air Force and the Air Force, performing reconnaissance and ground bombing missions. The Typhoon also assumed primary responsibility for air defense functions for most of the nations involved in the project.
