The Marian solemnity is linked to the tradition according to which the chapel, venerated in Loreto, is the room in which Mary was born in Nazareth, in Galilee, where she was educated and where she received the angelic announcement. This small biblical sanctuary, which fell into the hands of the Muslims, was first moved to Tarsatto in Dalmatia (1291), then to the Recanati forest and finally to Loreto in the night between 9 and 10 December 1294.

Popular belief has attributed to the "hand of angels" the transport of the "Holy House" to Loreto. This event is recalled today with the so-called "Feast of the Coming", a series of celebrations that are held every 10 December.

Pope Benedict XV, accepting the wishes of the pilots of the First World War (1914-1918), proclaimed Our Lady of Loreto Celeste Patroness of all aviators with the Papal Brief of March 24, 1920. The Holy Father also approved the blessing formula of the planes, which he had included in the Roman Ritual. The formula consists of three special prayers. In the first, God is implored so that the plane may serve his glory and the good of humanity, and vows of safety are made for those who use it. In the second and third, it is implored that the Virgin Mary and the Angel of the Lord accompany the flyers and make them arrive unscathed at the goal. On 12 September of the same year a religious-patriotic ceremony took place in Loreto for the proclamation of the Madonna of Loreto as Patroness. Shortly thereafter, on March 28, 1923, the Air Force was founded as an Armed Force. Since then, in all the Departments of the Air Force, the Virgo Lauretana has been venerated.

This year the Eucharistic celebrations dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto will be held on December 12, in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Force General Enzo Vecciarelli.
